What is the Carolina Mountain Trust for Children & Youth
The Carolina Mountain Trust for Children & Youth is an endowment fund developed to honor the children and families of the seven westernmost counties of North Carolina and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.
Money contributed to the Trust is used right here in western North Carolina to help our kids. All donations to the Trust are invested and the income is used for:
1. Grants to local organizations serving children and youth; and
2. Two yearly awards honoring exemplary volunteer service to children and youth.
Grant
The $1,000 grant awarded by the Trust each year follows the guidelines of The Alliance for Youth, a program designed to mobilize people from every sector of American life to build the character and competence of our nation's youth.
General Colin Powell, Former Chairman of the America's Promise Alliance, has challenged communities all over the country to become involved in America's Promise. The five goals of the Alliance, which the Carolina Mountain Trust address in this grant cycle, include:
1. An ongoing relationship with a caring adult - mentor, tutor, coach;
2. Safe places and structured activities during non-school hours;
3. A healthy start;
4. A marketable skill through effective education;
5. An opportunity to give back through community service.
The Trust also accepts nominations for Excellent Volunteer Service to Children. Nominees are accepted in two categories: youth (age 17 or younger) and adult (age 18 or older). This award is presented annually to persons who exemplify volunteerism in service to children and youth and a check for $100 is written to the charity of his/her choice.
